REFILL & ZERO WASTE SHOPS LDN
If you’re trying to cut down on your plastic waste, Zero Waste shops are the place to head! There are loads popping up all around the UK at the moment, and London is no exception. If you’re not familiar with the concept, a Zero Waste shop (also known as a ‘refill shop’) is where you can buy many household and food items in bulk, or without single-use plastic packaging. This is a great place to go if you just moved for your new house and need to get the essentials for your cupboards. Make your house a green house. The amount of plastic packaging used in our standard food shops from supermarkets can be ridiculous when you put it all together, and a lot of it is totally unnecessary! We all know how awful plastic is for our environment (including the coastal areas and marine life), so cutting it down where we can with our weekly shops can be a great step towards cutting down our waste. Below are five zero waste/refill stores you can find in London: BULK MARKET- HACKNEY
Arch 6 Bohemia Place, E8 1DU Hackney London, UK Based on Bohemia Place, the Bulk Market is open Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00 pm til 6:00 and Sundays from 11.00 to 4:00 pm, and stocks a large range of kitchen cupboard items in bulk. you have a minimum spend of £25 and a flat pack charge of £2.50 that will be applied to your order in case you do not bring your own containers. They also have a recycling program scheme now with Colgate where you can take your packaging and old toothpaste and they will recycle them for you. And the best bit, Bulk Market has launched the first retail destination in the UK dedicated to natural do-it-yourself beauty, the DIY Beauty Bar. The concept is the next step of zero waste shopping, where customers can have total control and understanding over the ingredients used in their skin care products, creating natural body butters, face masks, skin toners, makeup removers, face serums and bath salts without toxic ingredients and totally plastic-free. The system works in the same way as the rest of the store - customers are encouraged to bring their own containers to refill natural and organic cosmetic ingredients such as mineral clays, carrier oils, essential oils, cosmetic butters, floral waters, dried flower petals, bath salts, natural waxes and vitamins. All those ingredients can be combined to create a multitude of products ranging from lip balms, body butters, body and face oils, serums with anti-aging properties, body and face scrubs, cleansing lotions, bath bombs, bath salts, face toners, face masks and so on. Customers can also learn about each of the ingredients properties and have ideas of what can be created with the range of products available. Best idea ever!! You can also find some cleaning products and a big range of reusable. A place to visit. HETU- ST.JOHNS HILL
201 St. Johns Hill SW11 1TH London, UK Established in September 2017 and located a short walk from Clapham Junction Station, Hetu is hidden gem, drawing people in from the dreary and cold, winter days in London with it’s bright and charming layout. The shop has a number of different products including: herbs and spices, zero waste accessories, bathroom and beauty, cleaning product and food dispensers. Hetu was founded by Laura, who during her five years in Australia was introduced to the concept of zero waste. When returning to the UK she realised there was a serious lack of these shops around and Hetu, the vegan zero waste store was born. Although it is a small shop, it packs a lot. SUSTENANCE GROCERIES Brixton, Streatham & West Norwood This is a zero-waste shop covering a lot of ground, popping up in three different locations throughout the week. You can find Sustenance Groceries at the Rookery Farmers Market in Streatham, Brixton Farmers Market and in a pop-up shop at Portico Kitchen in West Norwood. Stocking all sorts of sustainable goodies, like British grown quinoa and organic hemp seed, you can check out this page to see when and where you can find them. BYO 21-23 Tooting High Street Tooting, SW17 0SN London, UK Throughout Tuesday-Sunday in Tooting Market you will be able to find the zero waste store BYO near Tooting Broadway Station. WHOLEFOOD MARKET 63-97 Kensington High St. Kensington W8 5SE London, UK On Kensington High Street you will find the WFM store of your dreams with a large self-service, unpackaged zero waste section. Whilst most of the items aren’t organic, with the exception of organic coffee (including organic decaf!) and some grains, they have an extensive choice of items like grains, nuts, seeds, superfoods and dried fruits.
